Behavioral Ecology: Manipulative Mutualism

نویسنده

چکیده

A new study reveals that an apparent mutualism between lycaenid caterpillars and their attendant ants may not be all it seems, as the caterpillars produce secretions that modify the brains and behavior of their attendant ants.

Florivores Limit Cost of Mutualism in the Yucca–yucca Moth Association

Multispecies interactions may have important consequences for the ecology and evolution of mutualism by changing the cost-to-benefit ratio. Here I determine whether florivorous beetles can limit moth populations and influence the costs of the mutualism between yuccas and their pollinating moths. Yucca moths actively pollinate yucca flowers, and their larvae feed on a portion of the seeds. I use...

Consequences of stage-structured predators: cannibalism, behavioral effects, and trophic cascades.

Cannibalistic and asymmetrical behavioral interactions between stages are common within stage-structured predator populations. Such direct interactions between predator stages can result in density- and trait-mediated indirect interactions between a predator and its prey. A set of structured predator-prey models is used to explore how such indirect interactions affect the dynamics and structure...

Behavioral, Physiological and Ecological Effects of Organisms in Symbiotic Associations

The significance of coevolutionary adaptations by associated organisms at the cellular and molecular level has been the primary focus of much research in symbiology (e.g., endosymbiotic hypothesis for development of eukaryotes). Studies on the behavioral and physiological ecology of organisms involved in symbiotic associations have also demonstrated extraordinary examples of adaptation. These a...

An orb-weaver spider exploits an ant–acacia mutualism for enemy-free space

Exploiters of protection mutualisms are assumed to represent an important threat for the stability of those mutualisms, but empirical evidence for the commonness or relevance of exploiters is limited. Here, I describe results from a manipulative study showing that an orb-weaver spider, Eustala oblonga, inhabits an ant-acacia for protection from predators. This spider is unique in the orb-weaver...
